BACK TO SCHOOL!
(HUNTSVILLE,ON)
– The summer season is coming
to an end, and with it we usher in a new school year. As motorists we now must keep a watchful
eye for children who may be walking or cycling to and from school. School buses will be reappearing on our
roadways. These motor vehicles stop frequently and appear to drive
slowly, but that is generally because they are adhering to the speed limit.
These actions can frustrate some drivers.
However
these vehicles carry our most precious cargo, our children and it is for that
reason alone, when following a school bus you should drive responsibly and
not aggressively.
The men and women who work at the
Huntsville OPP detachment are reminding our motoring public that passing
a stopped school bus with its’ stop arm out and red lights flashing is
an offence which could cost you $500.00 and 6 demerit points.

HUNTSVILLE DETACHMENT DATE: SEPTEMBER 6, 2010
USING PERSONAL FLOATION DEVICES MAY HAVE
SAVED CANOISTS
(HUNTSVILLE,
ON.) On Sunday September 5, 2010, three young males went out on
an early morning canoe ride on Skeleton
Lake, Huntsville
Ontario.
The boys found themselves in trouble with the strong winds; their
canoe capsized sending all three boys into the lake. None of the three were wearing any personal
flotation devices (PFD’s).
One of the youth managed to make it to
shore and called 911. The Huntsville
OPP detachment members along with Muskoka
Lakes Fire Department attended in
search for the missing two. It came
apparent that the two had not made it to shore, the OPP Underwater Search and
Recovery Unit (USRU) and the OPP helicopter attended to assist in the search.
Joseph SILVA (18yrs) and Brodie WILLIAMSON
(18yrs) of St. Catherines Ontario
were located later in the day by the USRU, not far from where the canoe had
capsized.
On those waterways policed by the OPP,
81 per cent of the deaths were recreational boaters who were not wearing a
lifejacket or PFD. Many boaters who
drown believe they are good swimmers so they think having a PFD on board, and
within easy reach, is good enough. An
average of 140 unnecessary drownings occurs every year in Canada.
