Break and enter to a residence
(Collingwood, ON.)
Officers from the Collingwood/The Blue Mountains detachment of the Ontario
Provincial Police (OPP) were called to attend to a break and enter to a
residence yesterday on Gibbard Crescent in the Town of Collingwood.
The break and
enter took place sometime yesterday between 8:30am
and 2:00pm. The culprit(s) forced their way into the
residence and proceeded through the entire house leaving items scattered
throughout. Stolen was a Wii gaming console and a small amount of money.
Later on in the
afternoon shortly after 3:00pm, the
owner of the residence on Gibbard Crescent
called police to report that her vehicle had been stolen from her workplace
parking lot at the Walmart in Collingwood. It is suspected that the
culprit(s) who broke into the residence stole a vehicle key which was then
used to steal the car.
Stolen is a 4
door 1998 Dodge Neon, Purple
in color with an Ontario marker APFM 860. The vehicle
would have a broken window which is how the culprit gained access into the
car.
Police are
continuing their investigation and are asking that anyone with information on
these two incidents to call the Collingwood OPP at 445-4321 or Crime Stoppers
at 1-800-222-TIPS.

OPP reminding residents of “emergency” scam
(Collingwood/The Blue Mountains, ON.) The Collingwood/The
Blue Mountains detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is sending
out this media release to remind residents of a phone scam known as the
emergency or grand-parents scam.
The victim receives
a phone call from an unknown person identifying themselves as a family member
that is out of town and needs money immediately. The victim is instructed to
send money via a money transfer service. The reason behind the urgent need
for money can be to repair damages to their car, their wallet was stolen and
can’t pay for their hotel bill or to pay for bail to get them out of
jail.
The same
scenario can happen where email accounts are hijacked by fraudsters, the
fraudster then sends out emails to friends/family on the contact list with an
emergency request for money.
OPP are aware of
some cases where area residents were contacted with such a scam,
unfortunately one resident was defrauded of several thousand dollars. If you
get an email or phone call and suspect it is a fraud, don’t send money
and call Phone Busters at 1-888-495-8501.

New regulations involving criminal record checks
(Collingwood/The Blue Mountains, ON.) In recent years the
Collingwood/The Blue Mountains detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police
(OPP) have had numerous requests for criminal records checks used for employment
and volunteer positions. In addition some citizens needed a vulnerable sector
check when they work/volunteer in a position that involved being in direct
contact with children or vulnerable persons.
In the past
those checks would take approximately one week to complete and return to the
applicant. Recently however, changes have been made which will make this
process much longer. Those changes may require the applicant to submit
fingerprints to be sent to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) which may
make the entire process take approximately 120 days for the results to
return.
Police are
sending out this release to inform those that require vulnerable sector
check/screenings of the possible delays involving this new process.

School is in!
(Collingwood/The Blue Mountains, ON.) The summer vacation has come and gone, much
too quickly, and children have now returned to school. As motorists we now must keep a watchful
eye for children who may be walking or cycling to and from school. School buses have returned on area roads
and we need to remind ourselves that these motor vehicles stop
frequently and appear to drive slowly, but that is generally because they are
adhering to the speed limit. These actions can frustrate some drivers.
However these
vehicles carry our most precious cargo, our children and it is for that
reason alone, when following a school bus you should drive responsibly and
not aggressively. We all know that with increased traffic comes a longer
commute, as such we should leave ourselves plenty of time to get to our
destination safely but also with respect to others on the roads. Motorists are also reminded to stop when directed to do
so by a crossing guard.
Officers at the Collingwood/The Blue
Mountains Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (O.P.P.) are reminding
our motoring public that passing a stopped school bus with it’s
stop arm deployed and red lights flashing is an offence which could cost you
$500.00 and 6 demerit points.

OPP STEPPING UP
ENFORCEMENT for UPCOMING LABOUR DAY Weekend
(ORILLIA, ON)
– As the hot days of summer draw to a close and people prepare to
celebrate the final long weekend of the season, the Ontario Provincial Police
(OPP) is reminding motorists and boaters traveling on OPP patrolled roadways,
waterways and trails during the Labour Day weekend that they should not be
taking any time off from thinking about safety.
To this effect, OPP officers will be out in full force
patrolling Ontario’s
highways, waterways and trails targeting aggressive drivers and marine
operators to ensure everyone’s safety.
“We are asking everyone to join our efforts by
acting responsibly while out enjoying the roads and waterways this upcoming
holiday long-weekend” said OPP Commissioner Chris Lewis. “The OPP will continue to demonstrate
our commitment to safe communities by being out in full force and targeting
those who put others safety at risk”.
Numerous lives have been lost on our roadways and
waterways this summer. So far this year,
205 people have died in traffic related fatalities in Ontario
on OPP patrolled roadways as compared to 199 in 2009.
Marine fatalities are down in 2010 to 17 to date as
compared to 27 in
2009. Despite this trend, the OPP
continues to respond almost daily to calls from people in distress on our
waterways.
“The increase in the number of fatalities from last
year causes the OPP great concern” said Deputy Commissioner Larry
Beechey, Provincial Commander responsible for OPP Traffic Safety
Programs. “This is not
acceptable and our stepped up patrols across the province will be addressing
this issue by targeting the aggressive driving and boating behaviours that
put the lives and safety of innocent people at risk.”
The OPP is calling on all motorists and boaters to keep
safety as a priority this long weekend.
Slow down and be respectful of others. Leave some extra time to get to your
destination and keep extra space between you and other vehicles or
vessels. Let’s work together to
make this final weekend of summer a safe one.
