BE SAFE LABOUR DAY WEEKEND
(Nottawasaga OPP, ON) As the hot days of summer draw to a close
and people prepare to celebrate the final long weekend of the season, the
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding motorists and boaters traveling
on OPP patrolled roadways, waterways and trails during the Labour Day weekend
that they should not be taking any time off from thinking about safety.
To this effect, OPP officers will be out in full force
patrolling Ontario’s
highways, waterways and trails targeting aggressive drivers and marine
operators to ensure everyone’s safety.
“We are asking everyone to join our efforts by
acting responsibly while out enjoying the roads and waterways this upcoming
holiday long-weekend” said OPP Commissioner Chris Lewis. “The OPP will continue to demonstrate
our commitment to safe communities by being out in full force and targeting
those who put others safety at risk”.
Numerous lives have been lost on our roadways and
waterways this summer. So far this
year, 205 people have died in traffic related fatalities in Ontario
on OPP patrolled roadways as compared to 199 in 2009.
Marine fatalities are down in 2010 to 17 to date as
compared to 27 in
2009. Despite this trend, the OPP
continues to respond almost daily to calls from people in distress on our
waterways.
“The increase in the number of fatalities from last
year causes the OPP great concern” said Deputy Commissioner Larry
Beechey, Provincial Commander responsible for OPP Traffic Safety
Programs. “This is not
acceptable and our stepped up patrols across the province will be addressing
this issue by targeting the aggressive driving and boating behaviours that
put the lives and safety of innocent people at risk.”
The OPP is calling on all motorists and boaters to keep
safety as a priority this long weekend.
Slow down and be respectful of others. Leave some extra time to get to your
destination and keep extra space between you and other vehicles or
vessels. Let’s work together to
make this final weekend of summer a safe one.
“Nottawasaga OPP officers will continue to be
diligent in their efforts locally with enforcement and awareness to keep the
members of our community and its visitor’s safe during their travels,
especially in light of increased traffic volumes this final long weekend of
summer, said Detachment Commander Inspector Dirk Cockburn. Safety begins with patience, planning and
the making the right choices with utilization of safety equipment and simply
obeying the law. “
Police are asking anyone with information relating to this
incident to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at
1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Crime Stoppers
is completely anonymous and does not subscribe to call display. You will not testify in court and you maybe
eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,000.

SCHOOL BUSES ARE BACK ON THE ROADS
(NOTTAWASAGA, ON) – Nottawasaga OPP want to remind
everyone that on Tuesday September 7,
2010, the school year will begin.
Excited children will be running and skipping on sidewalks and our
streets. Motorists need to be aware of
this changing environment. Kids will
dart across the road. As a responsible
motorist, be sure to drive with your head up watching for those active
members of our community. Ensure that
all hand held communication devices are put away until a suitable time. Drive with your hands on the wheel and your
eyes on the road.
While the summer traffic has been lighter during the
morning commute the back to school drop off time will slow traffic down. Leave yourself ample time to get to your
destination. As a reminder the speed
limit in a school zone is 40km/hour for the safety of the children. Nottawasaga OPP officers will be out
enforcing the posted speed limits.
Also, crossing guards are posted to protect the children as they cross
the street. Be aware of them and their
right to be on the roadway.
While there are some children who can walk to school
others need to be picked up by the school buses. These buses will be full of children going
to and from school at all times of the day.
Respect the school bus laws and stop when required. Passing a school bus with the stop arm out
and red lights flashing is an offence under the highway traffic act which
could cost you $500.00 and 6 demerit points.
Drive safe and respect the rules of the road. Nottawasaga OPP officers will be on the
roadways protecting our children.
